We carry only organic coffee because when coffee was first cultivated in Africa, it was done so naturally without chemicals, and the coffee grew under a natural shade canopy which also provided a home to birds and other animals. Gradually, however, as coffee grew into the second most traded commodity behind oil, farmers and larger plantations began to clear cut forests and depended more heavily on pesticides and fertilizers in an effort to produce a higher yield.
